Toddler Program

The first years of your child’s life are crucial to the development of personality and intellect. This is a period during which learning takes place at an accelerated speed. At Discovery School, we provide the sense of security and loving care that toddlers need to thrive during this state of intense learning.

Since toddlers are specially bent on achieving independence, our staff provides responsive, individual attention as your child deals with positive experiences as well as frustration. The Montessori early childhood education for infants, toddler and the two year old curriculum takes advantage of the rapid growth of gross and fine motor skills at this state. The toddler program focuses on five key developmental areas:

Sensory and Perceptual Development • Self-help Skills • Language Skills • Physical and Motor Skills • Social and Emotional Growth

This program starts at 18 months and offers both half-day (8:30 am - 11:30 pm) and full-day (8:30 am - 3:30 pm) classes.

Primary Program

The primary classroom is a “living room” for children. Children choose their work from among the self-correcting materials displayed on open shelves, and the work in specific work areas. The program has five distinct areas, which constitute the prepared environment.

To young children, there is something very special about doing things that adults find ordinary. Practical life exercises such as pouring and spooning, washing dishes or polishing shoes completely absorb them. We recognize this process as the beginning of control and coordination of mind and body. Through sensory experiences, our Primary Program helps children distinguish, categorize and relate new information to nuances of the English language. Our program includes:

Mathematics • Music and Creative Movement • Language Arts • Science • Geography • Spanish • History • Physical Education • Cooking and Nutrition • Art

The important task of the primary environment is to provide students with an early and general foundation that includes a positive attitude towards school, inner security and a sense of order, pride in the physical environment, abiding curiosity, a habit of concentration, habits of initiative and persistence, the ability to make decisions, self-discipline, and a sense of responsibility to other members of the class, school, and community.

Elementary Program

The elementary program offers a continuum build on the preschool experience. The environment reflects a new stage of development. At this level, your child is ready to learn abstract principles. They are able to work at their own pace in a noncompetitive atmosphere. Integration of the arts, sciences, geography, history and language evokes the native imagination and abstraction of the elementary child. There is presentation of the formal scientific language of zoology, botany, anthropology, geography, geology, etc., exposing the child to accurate, organized information and respecting the child’s intelligence and interests.

We integrate the use of timelines, pictures, charts, and other visual aids to provide a linguistic and visual overview of the first principles of each discipline.

A mathematics curriculum presented with concrete materials that simultaneously reveal arithmetic, geometry, and algebraic correlations. There is an emphasis on open-ended research and in-depth study using primary and secondary resources as well as other materials. Our program combines physical and emotional development with the academic disciplines and offers the following:

Language Arts • Art • Mathematics • Spanish • Music • Physical Education • Social Studies • Science
